Tell me what you eat and I’ll tell you what you are. No! I certainly don’t intend to predict anything about you nor am I a psychic but has nobody heard of the adage, “You are what you eat”? Of course, you have. This obviously doesn’t literally translate to the words but anyway does deliver a strong message. Allow me to elucidate this with the help of an example...
Recall taking a sip of your protein shake. Every cell in your body confronts the glucose and amino molecules from the shake and partakes the portion of it as required. Those molecules would then be somehow converted into energy or into a part of the cells themselves, the process being much more complicated than you could imagine. Also consider, snacking a pack of French fries with some complimentary acidic soft drink. Nothing different would happen to the food even this time. After contemplating both the cases, what kind of food would you like your body to be made up of?

It goes without saying that everyone wants a healthy body but not everyone would choose to go through all that is required to achieve the same. Why is that? I assume negligence is the blameworthy. You give up your health to serve your gustatory cells. A delicious meal may relish your taste buds for a few minutes but what you borrow from the food would escort you ceaselessly over a stretch of months or even years. How reasonable is our obsession with taste? How rational is our negligence? What binds us to fugacious comforts keeping us from long term health benefits is something that seeks deliberation.
You are destined to become what you eat
Whether you are tubby or wafer-thin, if not for any medical condition, the entire credit goes to your diet and eating pattern. You can’t be eating food of which every single bite is dipped in oil and lust for a beach body. Similarly, eating less than what is actually required won’t be advisable at the same time. Eating unconsciously, habitually overeating or eating nothing at all- you follow a pattern and your body comes back with a matching response. This implies, whenever you are clear with your goal and have a plan, you can then sit down, eat and await positive results.
You are blessed to be what you are
Nature has granted us a life better-off than other mammals and species. Which other creation of nature is blessed with such intelligence to gain insight on what they are and how things work in coordination to keep them alive? We chose the way we want to live. We grow what we want to eat. There’s nothing we haven’t done to better our lives but we’ve somehow failed to cultivate healthy habits in our diet. Doesn’t it feel like despite having received all the privileges and regardless of the infinite knowledge, we have failed to keep up with health and longevity?
Living vs aging
Living your life and getting old are not synonymous. You can chose how to live your life. Apparently, aging is something that you can’t desist from. Is there a spark of life in your existence? We have seen people spending half of their lives pleasing their taste buds and the other half looking for restoration of health. So what do we conclude? You live half of your life and the next half you just age. Is that what we want? Life in any form is a balance of catabolic and anabolic activities. As we age, the catabolic activities take over and this is how life is destined to end. Not to mention, this balance of anabolism and catabolism is what determines life expectancy and this is by far driven by what we eat.
Some suggestions
Satiety response
Learn when to stop eating. Your body has a mechanism called the satiety response. This signal operates naturally when the energy requirements of the body are met. An easy way to cultivate the satiety response is to drink water before starting your meal.
Food cravings
People who deal with regular craving for sweet or something else for that matter, need not intercept it harshly rather they should try eating some fibrous foodstuff before going for their favorite ones. This way, they can reduce the intake of it to half or even lesser.
The sense of taste
The sense of taste exists to enable us to distinguish between what we eat. This is a secondary stimulator to energy procurement via food intake. Taste was never supposed to be a primary fulfillment as it has become today.
Upanishad on food
The Taittiraya Upanishad describes how important the food we eat is and I quote, “From food are all creatures born. It is therefore said to be the medicine for all diseases of the body. All beings feed upon food and when they die, food feeds upon them.”
Addressing the health problems like obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes etc. and suggesting precautions and remedies is quite an easy task in comparison to following those guidelines strictly and keeping oneself motivated yearlong. Unfortunately, no matter how many fitness blogs you go through, how many videos you watch, unimplemented knowledge continues to be a burden on the mind. Just make sure diet has a first in place role to play in your life and you’ll always be good to go. Eat well and be thankful to life.
