Prevention vs Cure

Our society has advanced in a direction where we would bluntly neglect preventive advice from a nutritionist or dietitian and chose to follow a doctor's prescription instead. Now we no more live by the old proverb that says 'Prevention is better than cure'. Perhaps we have failed to realize the importance of health above other aspects of life also forgetting that life isn't mere survival. Why can't we hold back on things that deliberately sabotage our health?

There's is no real discord between prevention and cure. General philosophy claims that there's a belief on prevention being statistical by nature and cure being something very certain. We think that we can cure a disease more accurately that we can prevent it's occurrence. This opinion is a highly mistaken one. Moreover, the old adage 'You don't value what you have until it's gone' goes well with health and wellness.

Although, there's no one who would question preventive strategies over curative acts, here's why prevention unfailingly wins over cure :

Money Factor:

It's important to clear out the money factor before even getting started with other crucial aspects. So why do you save money? Everyone would have a different answer to this question but for those who don't believe in prevention of health issues, one thing would be common, a large part of their savings being taken away by their doctors. Why not invest in healthy eating and healthy living before you reach a stage where only a doctor could help you?

Promise of Recovery:

When after neglecting healthy lifestyle habits and hygiene practices for an entire life you see a downfall in your health, you promise yourself to do all it takes to keep healthy once you recover successfully ,irony being you don't even know whether the odds are in your favor or not. Had this promise been made earlier in life, you would not have fallen in a situation where hope ties knots with uncertainty. Your doctor may save your life but cannot return you your health.

Side-effects of Treatment:

Once you fall victim to ill health, there's no guarantee of full recovery. This of course doesn't hold good for everyday illness but some serious ailment is what is being referred to here. Even medications have side-effects that may induce some other problem in attempt to cure a suffering. Several drugs are known to incapacitate the gastrointestinal system and this is just another example, one of the many known side-effects.

Dependency:

A laid up man seeks support. There is nothing one can do for himself in a situation where health is already at stake. Although prevention and precautionary measures take considerable self made effort , there is no relying on others to take care of you. Curing an ailment requires the effort being made by a third person be it a doctor, a family member or someone else. We should be taking care of the body we live in at least to the maximum potential we possess. Family and doctors will always be there in case of mishaps. We surely don't want to create trouble on purpose.

Time Factor:

People who don't take proper care of themselves early in their lives eventually fall subjugate and get confined to bed by illness. Getting well takes time and a part of life that could have been enjoyed with family and friends gets wasted curing the malady.

Spreading the problem:

Some people would wake up only after the problem strikes. This illustrates another instance where lack of prevention demands a cost. Contagious diseases like skin infections, cold and even bronchitis happen due to inadequacy of hygiene and proper care which could have been taken care of beforehand. This does not only create trouble for the patient but also poses threat to the patient's surroundings.

Everyone's got a vehicle. Do you get it serviced at intervals or do you wait for the engine to collapse and then get it fixed? Our body is nothing but a machine. Why do injustice with it? We will shortly post some preventive strategies to avoid common health issues. Stay tuned :)
